Goal
This project leveraged information on the route of antibiotics administration (via oral intake or injection) to to estimate the proportion of oral antibiotic use across different healthcare sectors.
Lead
Cherry Lim – Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford
What we did
We analysed antibiotics sales data from the IQVIA-MIDAS database and inpatient antibiotic use data from the Global Point Prevalence Survey (Global-PPS) network from across eight countries in 2019.
Key learnings
Using multiple antibiotic data sources and administration route details, we can estimate national use across healthcare sectors even without patient data—less than 7% of oral antibiotics were used in hospitals.
