We support WHO across the following terms of reference
Provide recommendations to WHO on the maintenance and update of the AWaRe classification of antibiotics.
Provide support to WHO for the planned regular updates to the AWaRe Antibiotic Book.
Provide support to WHO for the further integration of the AWaRe system and the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical/Defined Daily Dose index in antimicrobial use surveillance methodology.
Provide support to WHO to develop AWaRe-based quality indicators and global and national targets for antimicrobial use.
In collaboration with WHO, develop and disseminate AWaRe system-based tools and resources for antimicrobial policy and stewardship
What is AWaRe
The AWaRe system is a way of classifying the >250 antibiotics used in humans into three groups: Access, Watch and Reserve, which are traffic lighted (Access: green, Watch: orange, Reserve: red). The United Nations General Assembly in 2024 recommended that the AWaRe system underpins global antibiotic surveillance and that 70% of all antibiotics used in humans should be from the Access group.
